Useful Advice for Improving Typography Skills

by Mr Smith's Letterpress Workshop

Typography is a type of art, and as with any form of art, there are no real set rules or formulas to follow. Different typographic choices work for different texts and lines. Choosing the correct typography setting can enhance how its read and understood.

Getting into design and typography can be fun and exciting and provide a way to show emotion with the visual qualities of the text.

Avoid Font Hierarchy

Font Hierarchy is the arrangement of the font with regard to the size, position, and general alignment of the text. Some believe that positioning headings and subheadings rather than the rest of the text can influence how somebody might react to the words.

Pairing Various Fonts

Using too many fonts in a text can be a bad idea but combining and pairing two different fonts together creates interest. When fonts are combined together well, it can provide beautiful results and will be seen as good quality typography. Experimenting with favourite fonts and colours can provide a great means to get into combining fonts.

Consider the Audience

Creating text and designing typography needs to provide a message to the intended audience and be attractive to them. The focus when designing text should be about engaging and communicating with the audience in mind. Choice of fonts, colours, and arrangements will demand the audience’s attention.

Headline Details

Headlines are one of the most important factors drawing people to read content or text. Headlines are the first words a person sees when reading an article and needs to draw attention to the content.

Powerful yet understanding headlines are essential to drawing attention to content, and it makes the headline speak to the reader. As with typography design, the headline creates a feel for the content or text.
